Aarhus City lab is a digital test center for smart city solutions and a showroom for smart initiatives. The City Lab creates a digital playground for Smart Aarhus, but also for cooperative partners who can investigate and develop new solutions directly into the real-life case area in the center of Aarhus.
How would it be possible to implement Smart City solutions around the entire city? Questions regarding Smart City implementations have frequently been raised. One of the answers in Aarhus might be the urban laboratory of Aarhus City Lab, where smart solutions are being tested at the location from the harbor front and into Aarhus North.
The purpose of this project is to establish an area which can function as a test center for Smart City solutions, at the stage before they can be taken into actual use. Thereby Smart Aarhus has created an open space where it is possible to work on innovative and experimental solutions and technologies at an early development stage. Also, the solutions might use the area as a test run – but in a larger scale than before. At the same time the City Lab contains both innovative not-finished solutions and those initiatives which are heading towards the final establishment.
Smart City infrastructure must lead the data
Basically, the City Lab is established to be the test facility for intelligent Smart City solutions. To get there Smart Aarhus tests different kinds of smart infrastructure which is created to collect and adapt the data. Among other technologies WiFi, 5G, LoRaWAN and high positioning technology are being tested. Besides the core technology, the area is also facilitating soft values by visualizing Smart Aarhus which is supporting the dialogue between the citizens and the City of Aarhus. This urban laboratory is a case engaging and inspiring citizens, businesses and institutions to take part in developing smart city solutions.
In the beginning the prioritized areas of Aarhus City Lab were mobility, parking, trash management, digital art & culture, events, exhibitions, public hearings, interactive installations and much more.
Space for dialogue
One of the main tasks for the City Lab is to unlock dialogue across citizens, business and the City of Aarhus. Smart Aarhus collaborates with local small and medium-sized companies, start-ups, knowledge institutions and other relevant partners.
For those partners Aarhus City Lab becomes a great opportunity to promote themselves by showing and testing their ideas. The experience from the urban and real-life environment makes it easier to gain knowledge and expertise which are fundamental for up-scaling the initiatives. The ambition is that the projects are established across different operators with Aarhus City Lab supporting the development, commercialization and implementation.
Geographically Aarhus City Lab stretches from Agro Food Park in Skejby to Dokk1 in the city center of Aarhus. The epi center for most initiatives will be found at the harbor front between Navitas and Dokk1.
Aarhus City Lab supports different existing projects. You can read more about our current projects on this site:
IoT Crawler – The City of Aarhus is engaged in making real-time data usable. The EU projects IoT Crawler is an initiative which aims to make all kinds of data applicable by using a new platform.
Vertigo – Sleep in the City – As a living expression of the Smart City development, two artists have launched the project “Sleep in the City”. It is an artwork promoting the importance of sleep by using smart technology.
TAPAS – Some Smart City solutions depends on accurate positioning technology. TAPAS brings Aarhus distinct positioning data giving the City of Aarhus and businesses the opportunity to develop automotive vehicles and much more.
Open Data DK – A great amount of Smart Aarhus’ data is available on the data platform, Open Data DK. Access to public data is a part of showing the Smart City for citizens.
